Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
