In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
