Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
