RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
